Ruby Soho: Solo Debut @ The Tote, Sunday the 9th of October

Hey Guys,

I'm throwing a big gig for the launch of my solo career as a politically crazy punk/rock/country/folk singer.
It's on Sunday the 9th of October @ The Tote.

I have some of my favourites bands playing and my two favourite DJs- Ken Eval (PBS.fm Go for Broke) and The Dirty Frenchman (my big bro) spinning tunes in between.

Doors Open at 5.30pm and
I'll be on at 6.30. So come early to support me being mentally ill.

I also have a mean ass BBQ planned- and there'll be sausages, burgers (for the vegos to) and hopefully Dutch croquettes. Depending if I can get mum to make some, or I get some time.

What the day has to offer.

Ruby Soho (6.30pm)
Ruby Soho (Garageland PBS.fm) is launching her punk/folk/country solo outfit. With songs like Pash Rat, Suicidal Tendencies and No Remorse it’s going to be an interesting experience to say the least. To keep it sane she’ll be doing a couple of covers by the likes of her heroes Johnny Cash and Bobby D and getting her acoustic wah wah on!

The Council (7.30pm)
Explosive New Zealand duo the council will be shredding there mix of riff infueled bluesy, rock and roll. Always a damn good time and good for a sweet boogy.

Burn In Hell (8.30pm)
Explosive Melbourne rock and roll out fit Burn In Hell will be gracing the stage with a performance of magical mayhem. These boys know how to get the ladies dancing to the devils music like no other band in town. The drunken sailors never fail to impress.

Bunny Monroe (9.30pm)
Garage rock outfit Bunny Monroe is back in town in a big way. The five-piece all female line up has been working hard. With new songs and an album on the way the ladies are sounding tight. After finishing there September residency at the Cherry Bar these girls are ready to get loose (I mean let loose) on the Tote stage.
Come down amigos! We would love to have a beer with you. xxx

Max 'Son Of' Crawdaddy Sundays

Don't go to church? Me niether. The Catholics didn't want a bar of what I had to say. So instead of becoming a Benedictine Nun, I've become a rock and roll one.

Every Sunday at Cherry bar one of my favourite DJ's and RRR102.7fm presenter DJ Max Crawdaddy (10-12pm Thursdays) is going to DJ some mad ass tunes.

More about Max:
http://www.rrr.org.au/presenter/max-crawdaddy/
Yep he's halarious and rad.

And I'll be doing the BBQ. I'm doing some fundraising to get my amazing little sister Kate Koomen to Africa to work with some refugees in February. She'll be graduating her degree in social work at the end of the year and has copped a bit of a hard run. I'll have more on the mission soon.

xx

Wooden Shijips Interview

Just did an interview with San Francisco legends Woolen Shjips. Well Nash the keyboard player anyhow. (Total dude.)

We discussed all things cowboys, good American music and their new album 'West' which will be released in Australia on the 2nd of September, 2011. (3 days away people). That'll be available from all GOOD record stores. I doubt from ballsy mainstream satin rubbish pits.

You can here the interview live on my radio show Garageland (106.7PBS.fm) this Wednesday from 10.00pm Melbourne time this Wed the 31st of August. Or you can stream it anytime after 12.00pm from  http://www.pbsfm.org.au/garageland/audio

Ruby Soho Lyrics: Manager

The story behind Manager

I worked at a Cherry bar in Melbourne for three wild years. One of my managers was a class A prick. This is a song wacked together about him. I sing it everytime one of my bosses are royal cock heads just for the hell of it.

It originated from my favourite Ramones song Mama’s boy. I hope you like it.

Peace and love,
Ruby Soho

Manager (By Ruby Soho and Joey Ramone)
Guitar by Ruby Soho... different to original

Verse 1. (By Joey Ramone)
Couldn’t keep a secret
Got a concrete skull
Couldn’t shut up
You’re an imbecile
You’re an ugly dog
There’s nothing to gain
You couldn’t shut up
You got a bad, bad brain

Chorus: (By Ruby Soho)
MMMMM.. MMM… MMM. Manager
MMMMM.. MMM… MMM. Manager
Take a chill pill… It’s just a title
You are only a bloody manager

Verse 2. (By Ruby Soho)
Look at you you’re on a power trip
But everyone just thinks you’re a dick
You go around thinking you’re so cool
But we just think you’re a massive tool

Chorus

Verse 3. (By Joey Ramone)
Couldn’t hold your tongue
You’re not even young
But like a two year old
You told, you told
Your all the same
Your jellybean brain
Everyone’s a secret nerd
Everyone’s a closet lame

Musical Chairs on the Breakfast Spread

Thanks to Jenny and Crispi on the breakfast spread @ PBS.fm for a rad old time on musical chairs this morning... you can listen to the broadcast from the archive from here:
http://www.pbsfm.org.au/node/10152
(about a third of the way in)

Questions asked and tracks played
 1. What is the first song that you played on your first pbs show? (not a fill-in)
I couldn't actually remember but knowing how simple minded I am I would have started it with the track that originated my show.. Garageland, by The Clash. The whole concept of the show came to me after I first watched The Future is Unwritten: Joe Strummer in 2007... it changed my life.

2. What is your favourite gig that you've been to and your highlight track from it?
Antwerp @ Trix.... Roky Erickson- (whole set) but for listeners good times.. Don’t Slander Me. Being able to see Roky Erickson live was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.. it may have been hyped by the fact that I hadn't seen a band in two months. A hard question but I think I nailed it... and good to give the Aussy rendition a spin to. I love the Double Agents.

3. What's the song that's guaranteed to get a response from your listeners? (e.g. A Killer Track)
Cold Blooded Old Times. Smog.... every time I play it a few people call in.
It just brings me back to that magical weekend away at ATP @ Buller. The time of my life.
This video is sooo the ride home... seedy as, but pretty good if Bill Calahan is involved I do say.

4. What is a track from a local act that best represents your show?
I could have done a million... in my rushed state I just chucked on that newest record by the UV Race, the song about a street... because we were talking about Rae Street... bloody deadshit I am.. great track though.

5. What is the song that best defines your life thus far?
The Dictators, Pussy and Money… No Brainer.... this song/ album saved me in sooo many ways. So what if my mates don't understand me.. the Dictators do, life's a real funny joke!

Week 3. Garageland

Hey peeps,

The weeks been pretty rad... Just trying to smash out this uni business before graduation, organize some gigs for the Bunnies and my new project (Ruby Soho and the radness) and politely fuck the man.... but it's a bit hard when he is fucking me and my fellow broke mates over big time... the bloody greedy scum bucket.

Anyhow on the good side of life :

Week 3 of Garageland was sweet. I had my old arch nemesis on the program, Ben Michelle. He used to make my life hell when I worked at Cherry Bar... a delightful prick. But somehow he turned into a nice guy apologised and then he came and spun some rad ass beats on my show last night. SICK. Another plus is I wrote a real nice hate song about him too: MANAGER! I'll post some Soho lyrics soon.

AND MUDHONEY are playing Meredith! RAD!

Here is this weeks setlist, gig guide and some rad blogs to check out if your trying to kill time.
Peace and love

Garageland: What my new Radio show is about!

Presented by Ruby Soho
Every Wednesday night from 10:00pm to 12:00am
On the worlds best radio station 106.7PBS.fm

For me, my real life really started in the Garage. It was the place where I first played a guitar, learned how to spin dads old vinyl, where I listened to my first punk rock records, started my first band, drank my first beer, threw my first parties and fell in love for the first time. In the garage I learned the lessons for my future. It was my home.
Garageland is the track of a rock and rollers past and future.

Garageland explores the journey of the musician, perhaps it’s Roky Erickson before or after the psychedelic trip that would change his life forever, or the exploration of a 16 year old pubescent teenager from Pakenham causing some anarchy because no one understands him or her. Garageland is the exploration of the real characters in our story, the music makers, the dreamers of the dreams.

Whether it's rock and roll, blues, punk rock, soul or whatever genre the musician identifies themselves with, Garageland is their mix tape. These songs are the tracks of our past, that today shape our future, the songs we identify with when things are great or truly miserable. These musicians played not for the man or his money, but for the love of the music.

Each week I'll incorporate special guests into the program that have shaped my love for rock and roll. From musos to the fans, Garageland is the celebration of us celebrating the best religion ever ... music.

Included features: A gig guide: for the rock and roll capital of the world: Melbourne, special guests and just general rad times...

Catch you on the other side amigos.
Peace and love

Debating a parking fine

To whom it may concern,

My name is Ruby Koomen, I am a 23 year old political student, journalist and farmer from Pakenham.

On Tuesday the 2nd of August, I received a parking fine of $122 for having my car parked halfway in a car park outside the National bank. I ran into report a stolen wallet and cancel my cards, I was in a hurry as I didn't want anyone to use my credit cards (I have the filed paperwork from the police to confirm this). I could find no other parks in the area as there was works on a new supermarket complex across the road from my bank, where the bulk of the parks in Pakenham used to be placed.

I was only in the bank for about five or ten minutes in this time a parking inspector managed to fine me more than half or my weekly youth allowance payment.

I would like to debate this matter and I would like to have these charges withdrawn. It was a silly lapse in consciousness in my mind, I never realized that the country town I love had the capacity to inflict such pain on its residence. I spent some time in a sever depression and I am now still doubting my faith in society as a result of the incident. I promise never to make this mistake again.
The ticket parking number is: 1121543134812
Make: Toyota
Vehicle Number: Sedan
Colour: White
Offence: 0793- Stopping contrary to a no stopping sign
Location: James Street Pakenham

I have a couple of questions, maybe you can help me with.

Why is it that parking fines in Pakenham are far more exorbitantly priced than in the City of Melbourne (where my student accommodation is)?

Secondly, who benefits from these dollars if you do make me pay them? I hope it's a charity. Because as I have stated I am baffled at the huge cost to the citizen for such a minor offence. Such as having half of your car out of a line, when it was absolutely not obstructing anybodies safety. I'm sorry I am very frustrated, I haven't been able to eat anything but cheese on toast this week and was hoping for some vegetables.

Thirdly, do these parking inspectors receive a commission for making people this unhappy. I was severely depressed after receiving this fine. My faith in humanity once again collapsed. Why is it the poor stay poor and the rich stay rich and greedy?

And lastly, how is it that you expect a student on a centrelink income or any pensioner or low income earner to pay such hefty fines? Isn't this similar to robbery? If you are paid less doesn't it make more sense to have a fine for the poor? I wish i had this money I really do. I am going to try hard to make it but at the moment it's hard.

I volunteer at many great organizations around Melbourne I can get letters to prove I am not a criminal.

I look forward to your reply,
From a disheartened member of the community
Miss Ruby Koomen

THE REPLY

Dear Miss Koomen,

Thank you for your correspondence recieved 8 August 2011 in relation to the above infringement notice.

The policing of statutory prohibitions are an extremely difficult task for Council Officers, however, a necessary function to regulate parking behaviour.

Parking restrictions of this nature are regarded as high safety risk or traffic manament concern. They are put into place in order to address public safety and traffic issues. These restrictions are regularly enforced to minimise the possible associated risks.

I note your comments where you stopped in a no stopping zone due to a lapse in consciousness in your mind. However; parking your vehicle in this section of road causes safety concerns for other motorists and any pedestrians. The signs in this short distance are clearly visible to motorists.

In view of the above the infringement notice has not been withdrawn.

You've expressed that you are experiencing hardship; Council does at its discretion offer Payment Plans. Please find enclosed a payment plan request form.

Yours sincerely,
Alan Giachin
Manager Compliance

Me right now... pretty furious at my old mate Alan's inability to answer any of my questions.
Pretty sure the First Australians wouldn't smack this one on me. I wish we were living in the dream time. One day, these greedy, safety freaks will realize there is more to life than boring beauracracy and stupid rules... how many more rules can these fools possibly make?

Smack me with a parking fine you greedy dudes
It breaks me to pieces that you're so heartless and rude

But on the day that this world turns to black
I know that you'll realize that you were the twat

Instead of spreading the love, you filled the world with hate
And you'll be the last asked to enter when we get to the gate

Right now my insides explode at your love for the system
But I guess that's what happens in a world where you don't listen

I don't mean to disrespect you, it's just that you make me sad
In the end you'll realize us rebels weren't actually the bad.

Letter to the PM: Julia Gillard

Dear Ms Gillard,

My name is Ruby Koomen, I grew up in a small country town 47 km east of
Melbourne in the Dandenong Ranges. I am a 23 year old international politics
and history student, rose farmer, florist, citizen journalist, youth worker,
events manager and musician.
I am saddened to say that after five years of support for the labour party I am
beginning to loose faith in a party that I thought supported me.
This saddens me as I know that the liberal party does not have my best
interests at heart and I don't know what else I can do in this position. Can
you help?
I have recently relocated to North Fitzroy and for the next election I among
with many of my peers are planning on moving our vote into the Greens party.
Before I shift to this party and begin volunteering with them I would like to
know from you that this is indeed the right decision to make or should I
still be supporting the labour party?
Over the last year I have traveled the world, I even studied back in my
families home country. In Holland I learned my parents native language, spent
time with my family and met amazing people from all around the world. My
views on the world have changed completely in this time and I now know the
future leaders of our planet. My friends and room mates on campus were from
Wales, Pakistan, Albania, New Zealand, Israel, France, Germany, India,
Australia, America, Lebanon, China, Indonesia... and the list goes on.
Traveling made me learn that people all around the world are not very
different at all. At the end of the day they just want to sit down, have a
beer (well not in all cultures, but it's very Australian) with there loved
ones and enjoy this magnificent world we live in.
I will now list my problems with the system at the moment. These are views
that I have discussed with many of my peers and at a party the other day with
the farmers association of Australia (well mainly the Dutch ones.)
Melbourne is my favorite city in the world and it is turning into a "Nanna
state". Everyone around me is becoming increasingly unhappy and rude! The
youth just don't know what to do about it, but as you can see with our
efforts in the Live Music Rally a few months back there is going to be an
uprising if our political system continues to repress our souls.

Music, along with skateboarding, riding BMX and dancing are expressions of
our spirituality. Not all children are lucky enough to be educated as well as
us and some aren't even interested in academia, I know I wasn't I just wanted
to be a rock star! But when we get together and socialize these are aspects
that we admire about one another.
So when we partake in these things, we are not trying to disrespect our
elders simply express ourselves.
Please support organizations, like FreezaCentral, Push Start, Music Australia
and local venues. It was these places that I first was able to find my place
in society. And through them I have met some of the most wonderful people in
the world.
And do not ban the word "fuck" from our vocabulary.
English is a very limited language in the first place as one of my Hungarian
friends pointed out. And unlike the Hungarians we only have one word for hate
or love, please do not try and repress the natural progression of linguistics.
Or at the very least do not put it the hands of what is sometimes a very
corrupt police force. I have many stories of police abusing the system.
Swearing and assulting me and the youth because of our vulnerable positions,
particularly being female. I will talk to James Malina (labour Melbourne)
about them today if I can get him on the phone.
2. Small business owners are suffering because of new legislation.
As the owner of a small floristry business, a farmer at my parent's rose farm
and the ex manager of my favorite bar in Melbourne I can tell you that people
are unhappy and confused about all this red tape that has come out in the
last 10-20 years.
Bar owners- for example
I worked and occasionally managed the Cherry Bar in Melbourne for a few years
when I finished school. This fine establishment has live bands play there
often and is an iconic rock and roll venue you world wide.
Since new rules on security and paper work has been invented he is struggling
and with two new kids things are tough.
On my parents new rose farm we can't even get gas or water licenses as they
have all been lost in the system and nobody seems to have any idea what is
going on anymore. I am confused and scared for the world if we can't even
sort out how to get a farmer his water.
And in regards to the Carbon tax, we as a people are hugely confused about
what it even means? Educate the people and tell them that it is the best
interest of Australia and there children and they will vote it in of course.
Most people want to live old enough to see there grand children grow up.
We are sick of watching you squabble with Tony Abbott. That man is rude and
malicious, and his stance on women in society upsets me a great deal. There
is nothing in this world we can't do and we cannot be labeled by politics.
I was in a Australian politics class a few months before the election and the
whole class bar me said that a woman was going to run Australia one day. They
said not for another 10-20 years.
And here you are!
Please help mother this world back to goodness Julia. I know you are a good
lady. And that maybe you are now struggling in a system that is predominantly
men. But you are a strong intelligent woman, and though I don't agree with
the way you took power we forgive and we forget.

If you or anyone in the labour party would like to discuss any of these  issues with me. Please contact me on 0424991731

Kind Regards,
Ruby Koomen

Neither Julia or anyone from her party replied to this email. I did have a dream about her afterwards and she gave me a hug. It feels good to have it out of the system. And I did try to get in contact with the local labor party members... they are pretty slack at picking up phones... BALLS
